What are the benefits of collagen besides skincare?  What do you think of when you first think of collagen? Probably in a lot of creams and pills, and other products such as face exfoliation products which also help the skin a lot. Collagen is actually a complex protein found not just in your skin, but your digestive system, muscles and bones! Its production gradually gets lesser as we age. The more collagen you have, the younger you look! Is it more than just good skin? I’m here to tell you that it is.

Here are some basics you need to know about this complex protein first. Besides inhibiting sagging skin and aging, it can heal your gut and promote better muscle recovery. You can get collagen from various sources, including:

  • Natural sources such as bone broth , salmon and increase in Vitamin C rich foods as well as leafy greans.
  • Powder supplements or tablets
  • Drinks such as Skinade

Generally speaking, powders and liquid supplements are better absorbed. In the case that you can’t stand bone broth, these alternatives should prove great for your body.

What are the benefits of collagen besides skincare?

1. Reduces oxidative stress

Oxidation is a natural process our body goes through to metabolise and create energy. At this time, there are some toxic components produced during oxidation as well as there are antioxidants produced during this process.  Only when the toxic components exceed the antioxidants, we suffer from what is called oxidative stress. Stressed and aging skin is the least of your concerns here; oxidative stress is even known to cause cancer! I really insist on eating the right food for your body, and this is why. Whether you have Hashimoto’s or PCOS or whatever disease you’re suffering from, it’s an imbalance in the body. Let food be your medicine. Collagen can help combat this.

2. Helps heal leaky gut

This is one of the main benefits of collagen. The use of collagen can actually help you heal leaky gut, which is the root cause of most auto-immune diseases. Collagen helps soothe your gut and repair your gut lining. It also helps those who suffer from irritable bowel syndrome. It helps heal inflammation as well.

3. Muscle recovery

If you want to see some remarkable muscle recovery, start consuming more collagen because collagen can even help combat muscle soreness! Its regenerative abilities help your muscles easily. Because of greater muscle mass, your body will also burn more energy, resulting in a more svelte body. Did you know collagen can help heal wounds faster too?

4. Better skin, nails and hair

I’m not one for vanity, but it is true that the more collagen you produce; the more supple your skin gets and the more stronger your hair gets. If you don’t believe me, here’s a study on it. Your input determines your output, folks. According to Skinade experts, collagen helps “skin retain its youthful appearance, improves tone, texture, hydration, smooths furrow lines and promotes better skin suppleness.”

5. Reduced cellulite

Though most people will find this difficult to believe, but collagen can actually reduce cellulite! If you increase your intake of collagen, this will lead to improved skin structure, which in turn will show the appearance of reduced cellulite. This of course, has to be aided with the right diet and exercise.

I hope you enjoyed learning about these benefits of collagen! Have you heard of any other uses?

  1. i’m curious about the collagen drinks… how often should one have it? since these are expensive, not everyone can afford them on a daily basis like protein powder… so what’s the recommended dosage?

    1. I think they should ideally be had daily actually! I think bone broth is a much better source of collagen than these drinks. Maybe you can alternate till you see a significant difference?
